Mission and Vision

OUR MISSION:
Magdalena House is a neighborhood of transitional homes in San Antonio that serves mothers and children who have fled dangerous and abusive lives by providing transformation through education, nurturing community, and programming.

Magdalena House provides the families we serve with:
HOME
A beautiful, safe and nurturing transitional home for mothers and their children.
HELP
A program of supportive services for both mother and child that focuses on education, life enrichment, counseling, loving community and supportive wraparound services.
HOPE
A process that helps each mother work towards self-awareness and achievement of her personal goals in education, vocation, parenting, household management and spiritual formation.

WOMEN LEADING CHANGE:
Rev. Barker, also known as Denise, created Magdalena House in 2007, focusing on educating and empowering women. Denise talks about their mission,
“We walk with women for an unspecified period as long as they are willing to commit to the program of Magdalena House, which includes academics, living in the community, participating in events, and working on their emotional well-being.”

Description

Magdalena House offers transitional housing and wraparound services to mothers and their children escaping violence. We primarily serve four groups of vulnerable families.

Survivors of domestic violence.
Survivors of human trafficking.
Young mothers aging out of foster care.
Mothers working on reunification plans with Child Protective Services.
Vulnerable families

The mothers coming to Magdalena House have experienced extremely low self-esteem, stress, trauma, PTSD, fear and depression resulting from their violent situations and generational violence and poverty. These families coming to Magdalena House are facing homelessness and have little to no income.
Magdalena House is a beautiful 5-acre neighborhood of transitional homes in San Antonio that serves mothers and their children who have fled dangerous and abusive lives. Women and their children receive wraparound services and 24/7 support in a home-like environment, full of hope and accountability. Utilizing a dual-generation approach, we provide safe homes in an expansive natural environment, basic needs and educational programming, nurturing community and therapeutic services.

Mothers attend accredited academic programs year-round, including college, high school, GED or ESOL. They participate in peer enrichment group covering a variety of wellness topics and parenting classes. Families stay with us for multiple years until they have completed their educational goals. They are provided case management, connected to community resources, and assisted with legal services. Special community gatherings and events for families model and cultivate positive, supportive relationships.

Threaded throughout our programs and community life are holistic therapeutic services designed to foster self-awareness and emotional healing. Both mother and child develop social, emotional, educational, and financial skills needed to ensure their physical, economic, and spiritual well-being when they leave Magdalena House.
