Mission and Vision

Boerne Aquaplex is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that plans to develop and operate a full-service, all-weather aquatic complex in southern Kendall County to serve the aquatic instruction, recreation, and competition needs of schools, organizations, and individuals of all ages and abilities in the region. It also will be the home to Boerne Blaze Special Olympics swimming.

Description

The Need
The current and future unmet demand for instructional, recreational, and competition swimming in the region around and including Boerne has outgrown the existing and accessible swimming venues. The closest regulation-length aquatic centers that offer public access are located in San Antonio almost 30 miles from downtown Boerne.

The region comprised of the City of Boerne, southern Kendall County, northwestern Bexar County, and Bandera, Comal, Kerr, Gillespie, and Medina counties is one of the fastest-growing in Texas and the rest of the country. Boerne alone has more than doubled in population in the last 10 years, and the regional growth is accelerating with the expansion of Interstate 10 between San Antonio and Boerne.

Boerne Blaze Special Olympics delegation has a highly decorated and steadily growing Special Olympics swimming program that competes at area and statewide meets, but it lacks a regulation-length pool in which to practice and host competitions. The team currently enjoys the generosity of the Benedictine Sisters, who allow use of the Omega Retreat Center pool. Regrettably, weather, aging equipment, and demand from other users impact the pool’s availability.
